Yom Kippur: Torah - Maftir - Haftarah Readings

TORAH Parshat for Yom Kippur - Leviticus 16:1-34

1And HaShem spoke unto Moses, after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before Adonai, and died;

2and HaShem said unto Moses: ‘Speak to Aaron your brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the veil, before the ark-cover which is upon the ark; that he die not; for I appear in the cloud upon the ark-cover.

3Herewith shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering.

4He shall put on the holy linen tunic, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with the linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired; they are the holy garments; and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and put them on.

5And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two he-goats for a sin-offering, and one ram for a burnt-offering.

6And Aaron shall present the bullock of the sin-offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself, and for his house.

7And he shall take the two goats, and set them before the LORD at the door of the tent of meeting.

8And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats: one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for Azazel.

9And Aaron shall present the goat upon which the lot fell for the LORD, and offer him for a sin-offering.

10But the goat, on which the lot fell for Azazel, shall be set alive before Adonai, to make atonement over him, to send him away for Azazel into the wilderness.

11And Aaron shall present the bullock of the sin-offering, which is for himself, and shall make atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bullock of the sin-offering which is for himself.

12And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from off the altar before Adonai, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the veil.

13And he shall put the incense upon the fire before HaShem, that the cloud of the incense may cover the ark-cover that is upon the testimony, that he die not.

14And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the ark-cover on the east; and before the ark-cover shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.

15Then shall he kill the goat of the sin-offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the veil, and do with his blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the ark-cover, and before the ark-cover.

16And he shall make atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleannesses of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, even all their sins; and so shall he do for the tent of meeting, that dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses.

17And there shall be no man in the tent of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the holy place, until he comes out, and has made atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel.

18And he shall go out to the altar that is before Adonai, and make atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about.

19And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and set it apart from the uncleannesses of the children of Israel.

20And when he has made an end of atoning for the holy place, and the tent of meeting, and the altar, he shall present the live goat.

21And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, even all their sins; and he shall put them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of an appointed man into the wilderness.

22And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land which is cut off; and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.

23And Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting, and shall put off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there.

24And he shall bathe his flesh in water in a holy place and put on his other vestments, and come out, and offer his burnt-offering and the burnt-offering of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people.

25And the fat of the sin-offering shall he make smoke upon the altar.

26And he that lets go the goat for Azazel shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.

27And the bullock of the sin-offering, and the goat of the sin-offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall be carried forth outside the camp; and they shall burn in the fire their skins, and their flesh, and their dung.

28And he that burns them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.

29And it shall be a statute for ever unto you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and shall do no manner of work, the home-born, or the stranger that sojourns (dwells) among you.

30For on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins shall you be clean before the Adonai.

31It is a shabbat of solemn rest to you, and you shall afflict your souls; it is a statute for ever.

32And the priest, who shall be anointed and who shall be consecrated to be priest in his father’s stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen garments, even the holy garments.

33And he shall make atonement for the most holy place, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar; and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly.

34And this shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel because of all their sins once in the year.’ And he did as Adonai commanded Moses.

MAFTIR Reading- Numbers 29:7-11

7And on the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy convocation; and you shall afflict your souls; you shall do no manner of work;

8but you shall present a burnt-offering unto HaShem for a sweet savor: one young bullock, one ram, seven he-lambs of the first year; they shall all be without blemish;

9and their meal-offering, fine flour mingled with oil, three tenth parts for the bullock, two tenth parts for the one ram,

10One tenth part for every lamb of the seven lambs;

11One he-goat for a sin-offering; beside the sin-offering of atonement, and the continual burnt-offering, and the meal-offering, and their drink-offerings.

Haftarah - Isaiah 57:7-14 & Isaiah 58:1-14

14And He will say:

Cast up, cast up, clear the way,

Take up the stumbling block out of the way of My people.

15For thus saith the High and Lofty One

That inhabit eternity, whose name is Holy:

I dwell in the high and holy place,

With him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit,

To revive the spirit of the humble,

And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

16For I will not contend for ever,

Neither will I be always wroth;

For the spirit that enwraps itself is from Me,

And the souls which I have made.

17For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth and smote him,

I hid Me and was wroth;

And he went on frowardly in the way of his heart.

18I have seen his ways, and will heal him;

I will lead him also, and requite with comforts him and his mourners.

19Peace, peace, to him that is far off and to him that is near,

Says HaShem Who creates the fruit of the lips;

And I will heal him.

20But the wicked are like the troubled sea;

For it cannot rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt.

21There is no peace,

Says my G-d concerning the wicked.

1Cry aloud, spare not,

Lift up your voice like a horn,

And declare unto My people their transgression,

And to the house of Jacob their sins.

2Yet they seek Me daily,

And delight to know My ways;

As a nation that did righteousness,

And forsook not the ordinance of their G-d,

They ask of Me righteous ordinances

They delight to draw near unto G-d.

3‘Wherefore have we fasted, and You see not?

Wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and You have no knowledge?’—

Behold, in the day of your fast you pursue your business,

And exact all your labors.

4Behold, you fast for strife and contention,

And to smite with the fist of wickedness;

You fast not this day

So as to make your voice to be heard on high.

5Is such the fast that I have chosen?

The day for a man to afflict his soul?

Is it to bow down his head as a bulrush,

And to spread sackcloth and ashes under him?

Will you call this a fast,

And an acceptable day to Adonai?

6Is not this the fast that I have chosen?

To loose the fetters of wickedness,

To undo the bands of the yoke,

And to let the oppressed go free,

And that you break every yoke?

7Is it not to share your bread to the hungry,

And that you bring the poor that are cast out to thy house?

When you see the naked, that you cover him,

And that you hide not yourself from your own flesh?

8Then shall your light break forth as the morning,

And your healing shall spring forth speedily;

And your righteousness shall go before you,

The glory of the Adonai shall be your reward.

9Then shall you call, and the Adonai will answer;

You shall cry, and He will say: ‘Here I am.’

If you take away from your midst the yoke,

The putting forth of the finger, and speaking wickedness;

10And if you draw out your soul to the hungry,

And satisfy the afflicted soul;

Then shall your light rise in darkness,

And your gloom be as the noon-day;

11And the Adonai will guide you continually,

And satisfy your soul in drought,

And make strong your bones; And you shall be like a watered garden,

And like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

12And they that shall be of you shall build the old waste places,

You shalt raise up the foundations of many generations;

And you shall be called The repairer of the breach,

The restorer of paths to dwell in.

13If you turn away your foot because of the shabbat,

From pursuing your business on My holy day;

And call the shabbat a delight,

And the holy of the Adonai honorable;

And shall honor it, not doing your wonted ways,

Nor pursuing your business, nor speaking thereof;

14Then shall you delight yourself in Adonai,

And I will make you to ride upon the high places of the earth,

And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father;

For the mouth of Adonai has declared it.
